The Grizzly Bear Lesson

This is a story and language arts lesson about the last wild grizzly bear in Southern California. It includes a historical fiction story about a bear written by the Ohmapi team and based upon primary sources from the early 1900’s. It also includes a guided tutorial on how to draw a grizzly bear and how to draw the California flag. Writing skills are developed and practiced in this lesson.

Length of Lesson: 30-45 minute lesson

This language arts lesson helps students develop:

  • Listening skills

  • Comprehension skills

  • Writing skills: spelling and grammar

  • Knowledge about bears: behavior & lifecycle

  • Knowledge about the history of California and

  • Knowledge and drawing of the California State flag
